The Timekeeper: A Room With a (Fuzzy) View at This Happy Place Blog

Happy Thursday! So The Timekeeper is a new feature here at This Happy Place Blog that will focus on the past with a personal twist. I’m lucky to have taken so many embarrassing photos over the years and I thought this might be a fun way to incorporate them on the blog! (Obviously I have no shame…) Thanks to Elena from Novel Sounds for helping me brainstorm a name! Enjoy!

Psst.

I’m going to tell you a little secret. I wasn’t always the super stylish (in fashion and decor) gal I am today.

(Emphasize eye roll here.)

Let’s cut to the chase: this past weekend I was digging through some old photos and came across a few I took of my bedroom back in 2001. I should begin this by saying I was 16 years old, and yes, boys did date me even with a room like this one.

I must have taken this picture right before my parents surprised me and redid my room while I was away on a marching band trip. (They pulled up my shag carpet and finished the wood floors; my mom painted a dragonfly border around the entire room.) I was just inching out of my Tweety Bird phase… you’ll see more of that in the next picture. Clearly, Eeyore was the apple of my eye. Can you count all of them? I’m still unclear of what that black blob on my bed is… hmm…

Okay wow. Totally overwhelming, right? There was a time that the shelves with the plush animals stretched that entire wall so I guess I grew up a little bit… right? (Full disclosure: I was the kid who felt guilty when she couldn’t have all her plush friends sleep in bed with her at night.) I feel like the Disney Hipsters are going to have a heart attack when they see this, especially because of the picture frames and multitude of knick knacks. I’m better now I swear!

Here’s a bigger representation of all the critters that filled up my room back then. I highlighted the Disney-ish momentos but you can definitely see that I had a thing for Tweety bird. (Did you guys shift favorite characters too? I went straight from Tweety to Eeyore and I don’t really have one anymore.) Funny how this still represents Estelle as the adult — some Disney love mixed with the Muppets.  Typical me. (You can also spot 2 Snoopys and two Big Birds.)

I don’t have a picture of the opposite wall but it did have a TV and an entertainment center (years later the top of the EC was filled with the most Eeyore plushes in the world — or so I thought!) and a Dirty Dancing poster. I don’t remember much else.

In 2001, we had already been to WDW about seven summers in a row. What amazes me most about this picture is just how little of it actually reflects those trips and was stuff I had already been collecting or gifted throughout the years. (Examples: The framed Mickey & Minnie Mouse poster was a gift from my grandma when I was 3, and the small glimpse you can see of the Miss Piggy plush in photo 3 is from when I was around 4 or 5.)

Since then, my domain has grown and I have an entire house to fill with STUFF. But… my style nowadays is cleaner, I’ve donated a bunch of my prized plush collection, and I pick and choose what I buy when I’m at the parks or The Disney Store. (I also really like to throw stuff out… ask my husband.) After many HGTV marathons, I’ve worked hard to perfect ‘the art of staging’. So if there’s Disney stuff, I try to make it look as pretty and seamless as possible.

And for the record, I no longer sleep with any plush animals.

Oh my goodness, I thought I had a lot of plushies but it’s nothing compared to yours! Hooray for plush love, haha. This post made me smile so much, it’s so nice seeing your old room and all your Disney stuff. I’m curious to see how your room looks now!

I can TOTALLY relate to this post! I was obsessed with stuffed animals (and beanie babies) growing up. Up until about high school I had one wall with 3 shelves (the wire garage type storage shelves) that went all the way across one wall and another that went across an adjoining wall with all of my stuffed animals. Then I had all sorts of beanie baby holders all over my room. Thank goodness my decorating sense has improved since then! Although my hubby isn’t thrilled with the hundreds of beanie babies being stored in our garage/attic :)

p.s. I also had an obsession with Tweety!

I too had a crazy amount of plushes. Well, I still do, but they are tucked away in my childhood toy box (made by my grandfather). What remains are almost strictly Disney, with the exception of some childhood favorites, like Rainbow Brite, Gloworm, and Popple (mine is purple). Thanks for sharing these pics!

I had people who would buy me every.single.Eeyore. plush that came out. So it was quite a collection. I’ve widdled it down through the years and kept the ones that meant something… which is good because I still manage to have a ton of plush anyway! haha. Oh!! Popples! I havea good story about those, but I’m pretty sure I still have mine too?? Or the one I stole from my cousin… haha

Katie! Thanks so much for stopping in!! :) I love your comments so much and I think it’s funny how much we have in common. My hubs actually likes plush more than I thought… he still buys them for me quite a bit and I’m like AHH we have so many and then I panic. I don’t need a catastrophe like I had before. ;) Yay for Tweety! I had quite the t-shirt collection :)

E, you just gave me an idea for another set of posts! Thx for your help today. I’m glad you had a lot of fuzzy friends too!

I love seeing photos of friends’ old bedrooms, I would love to scan in some of mine!

I spotted what I think is a Babar toy in the third pic, right? Or at least one of the elephants from Babar.

I’m pretty sure I got a Minnie or Mickey cake one year, I’m going to have to dig out a photo (I know I got a Care Bear cake, maybe I’m wrong about the Disney one) and I went through a Tigger phase, toys, pjs, stationary etc :)

I can attest to the fact that her home no longer looks like this!! But it is a pretty cute bedroom. I LOVE the plush photo frame. I wouldn’t have it in my house. But I’d hug it if I saw it on a shelf.
