In the past two weeks or so there’s been a video circling of Frank Oz saying the most recent Muppets movie was too cute and too safe. I don’t necessarily think that’s true… but it got me thinking. If you’ve watched any episodes of The Muppet Show you can definitely see how the show and its characters evolved over the years.
In fact, there are so many skits that I find particularly clever and ‘grown up’ that I can’t help but think how awesome it would be to have them revived at some point. I thought I would share a few of them today:
a snarky kermit.
A lot like Mickey Mouse, Kermit has gradually become a bit more wholesome as the years have gone on. Here’s a great example of the feisty Kermit that I enjoy. Gonzo is a little upset that he hasn’t been featured on the show lately and Kermit tells him like it is. (Start at 3:27.)
the art of the one liner.
‘At the Dance’ is one of my favorite regular sketches on The Muppet Show. It’s a great way to see our characters and I feel like the writing of the show is at its best because the shortest moment has the biggest impact.
the totally random.
‘Talking Houses’ is another sketch that always catches me for surprise on The Muppet Show. The houses are not like normal Muppets, and like ‘At the Dance’ lasts for a minute or two. I actually love it.
Oh those Muppets, they are so gosh darn talented!
