I know some of you are going to question my taste when it comes to what I’m going to write next (maybe you have started to already) but here it goes… one of my favorite holiday albums is Radio Disney Jingle Jams. Released in 2004, it’s not sold anymore. I guess that makes sense since hardly any of the artists on this album are actually practicing musicians right now. (Hilary Duff is known more for her movie roles, and Raven Symone for her TV roles [R.I.P. State of Georgia.] The only exception might be Jesse McCartney.)
We used to listen to this obsessively when we were working the stock room during the holidays at The Disney Store and my ears are always happy when one of the songs pops up on my iPod since. As much as I love a classic Christmas carol (I have 18 versions of Silent Night in my collection right now), it’s just as great to hear something refreshing and fun and NEW. Not that these are that “new” anymore but you know what I mean. I wish there more people out there writing original Christmas songs these days instead of covering all the same ones. (I swear if I hear another version of “Last Christmas” I’m going to shoot someone’s eye out.)Well, before I get cracking on creating my own Christmas carol, here are a few of my favorite songs from the Radio Disney Jingle Jam album. They’re not for everyone but hey, they make me feel cheery. If you dare, take a listen…
Hilary Duff — Santa Clause Lane. As you’ll see in the album, this song actually plays in Santa Clause 2 and it’s also on Hilary’s Christmas album — which is by far one of the worst holiday albums EVER. And I like Hilary, I really do. (Just ask the folks over at Magic 24.7 — I’m always requesting her to break up the monotony of my work day!)
Jesse McCartney — One Way or Another. I can’t believe there is a video of this song. I’ll admit I had Jesse pictures all over my wall at college, and I also watched him religiously in Summerland on the WB. He’s absolutely adorable. And you know, he’s a pretty talented songwriter (he wrote Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love”). This isn’t the same version that’s on Jingle Jams. In fact, it’s better.
Christy Carlson Romano — Toy Town. Ignore the Mitchell Musso tribute. I have no idea why this fangirl paired him with this song. I don’t think I want to know. Anyway… anyone remember Christy from Even Stevens? She did some TV movies after that, and was on Broadway as Belle in Beauty & the Beast. I saw her in another play last year off-Broadway that wasn’t too great… and then she disappeared again? But hey, I like this song. It’s fun. (Beware, Mitchell is topless in a few of these.)
Huckapoo — Wild Christmas. Seriously? Who makes these videos? Here’s another wacky one. Scenes from Hannah Montana of Jake and Miley. Who I actually love together. Because you know, I’m 26 years old and care about Hannah Montana’s love life. (I do.) Anyway, this song is sort of a staple when I make holiday mixes for people. (Something I love to do.) It really breaks up all the traditional songs we are used to hearing all the time. Listen. Like it. It’s catchy!
And for an extra special bonus because I know you haven’t gotten enough of my AWESOME music taste yet… Not on the Jingle Jams CD… Aly & AJ singing “Greatest Time of the Year” from their Acoustic Hearts of Winter Album.
Okay, I’m done now. You are welcome.
