Muppet Monday: A Little Song & Dance

With the Tony Award nominations being announced tomorrow, what better time than now to celebrate some past Tony winners who made appearances on The Muppet Show.

One of the first I’ve seen myself was Joel Grey performing “Willkommen” from the Tony-award winning Broadway show, Cabaret, during Season 1 of The Muppet Show. In 1966, he won in the category of Featured Actor in a musical for Cabaret.

Next up was Liza Minnelli (daughter of Judy Garland) who was in a Season 4 episode of The Muppet Show. She sings a rousing version of Copacabana. Minnelli has been the winner of 4 Tony Awards, including 2 for Best Leading Actress in a musical (1965, 1978).

Fun fact: Joel Grey and Liza starred in the Cabaret film together in 1972.

Here’s a third for ya. Carol Channing, who won a 1964 Tony for her role in Hello Dolly!, sang “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” with Miss Piggy in a Season 4 episode of the The Muppet Show.

I’ve been waiting forever to be able to feature one of my favorite Muppet Show discoveries. I’m a huge fan of the Broadway composer, Stephen Sondheim, and almost died when I heard the Muppets performing “Comedy Tonight” from Sondheim’s musical: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The show won 5 Tony awards including Best Musical in 1963.

Who will collect some Tony nominations tomorrow? We shall see very very soon!
