Muppet Monday: Where I Sit

How about a little music on this Muppet Monday?

The first time I ever heard “Halfway Down the Stairs” was when the Muppets: Green Album came out in August of last year. Immediately I loved Amy Lee’s cover of the song. (I also loved her in Evanescence in high school. Who didn’t love Bring Me To Life?)

But even after listening to “Halfway Down the Stairs” on repeat on my iPod, I had no idea where the song came from.

I totally forgot about it until a few weeks ago when we were watching a few more episodes of season 1 of The Muppet Show and there it was… Robin (Kermit’s nephew) sitting on the middle step of a carpeted staircase and singing this little tune, during a Β rare, solemn moment in the show.

The Muppet Show version:

The song actually uses the verses from an A.A. Milne poem (author of Winnie the Pooh) titled “Halfway Down” set to music by Harold Fraser-Simpson.

Here are a few lines:

Halfway down the stairs
is a stair
where i sit.
there isn’t any
other stair
quite like
i’m not at the bottom,
i’m not at the top;
so this is the stair
I always

I love the simple message.

Here are two other covers. It’s amazing just how different each sounds.

Amy Lee version:

A bonus Gene Kelly version that I love:

Have a great Monday!

  1. I love that song — and I’d never heard the Gene Kelly version before! Thank you!

I love moments like this on the Muppet Show. They covered another great Milne poem, too: Cottleston Pie, sung by Rowlf.
