Muppet Monday: Vaguely Familiar & Almost Unreal

Well, today is the big day. Epcot turns 30.

I didn’t have much of a plan for connecting the Muppets and Epcot today. In fact, my only thought was to expand on the gang’s time in Epcot during their Walt Disney World special from 1989.

But David from the awesome blog futureprobe, Epcot and Muppet crusader, forwarded this nostalgic video he created and bam, a Muppet Monday was born.

So today, let’s remember why we love Epcot with a tribute to the park from 1982-1993.ย

David chose the perfect song to capture the bittersweet memories from Epcot Center. Gonzo sings “I’m Going to Go Back There Someday” around a camp fire with all of his new friends in The Muppet Movie. It’s a highly emotional moment in the film (even though Gonzo’s voice isn’t the prettiest) and the lyrics ring so true, on a day like today, when we celebrate a beautiful park and yearn for a little of the spark it used to have.

This looks familiar, vaguely familiar,
Almost unreal, yet, it’s too soon to feel yet.
Close to my soul, and yet so far away.
I’m going to go back there someday.

Sun rises, night falls, sometimes the sky calls.
Is that a song there, and do I belong there?
I’ve never been there, but I know the way.
I’m going to go back there someday.

Come and go with me, it’s more fun to share,
We’ll both be completely at home in midair.
We’re flyin’, not walkin’, on featherless wings.
We can hold onto love like invisible strings.

We hold onto love like invisible strings. What a gorgeous line. Unsurprisingly this tune was penned by the same duo who wrote “The Rainbow Connection”: Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher.

So here’s a Muppet happy birthday to Epcot, hoping the next 30 years are full of wonderful new experiences and a continued ย effort to embrace the Epcot Center legacy!

  1. Thanks for posting your feelings and the video about EPCOT. I grew up in California and while I visited Disneyland often, I was not able to visit WDW until last year. I sure wish I had seen what you all had seen. It sounds wonderful.

    1. Hi Debbie! Thanks for stopping in! You know, I’ve only been to DL once so it seems like we are feeling similar things here. Just the opposite. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I hope you stopped by David’s blog to hear more about his love for EPCOT Center.
