When we were cleaning through our movie collection last weekend, we made a pretty big pile of movies “we have been meaning to watch but have not made the effort to” and Muppet Treasure Island was on the list. I honestly don’t remember seeing this one much when I was a kid. (I do know that my grandma bought me a boot-let VHS though!) This weekend, we made good on our promise to pick from that prized pile and popped the movie in.
What did I think?
Well, it’s not the best work from the Muppets but it definitely had a few entertaining parts. Like this scene called “Cabin Fever”:
Is it the hats? The utter mayhem? Honeydew sunning himself like he’s on a pleasure cruise? All these pirates, Muppets, and whatevers losing their minds? Well, it could be all of those things.
Oh wait, there are also maracas. Which I love.
(Best line: “I’d like to get my hands on whoever wrote this script.)
As for the rest of the movie, Tim Curry plays a pretty ruthless Long John Silver, Jim Hawkins sports a mullet and has a very high singing voice, and Kermit the Frog has a freaking tattoo. I am not kidding. It’s also sort of strange to have a movie with all male counterparts basically and save Miss Piggy’s entrance for the last half of the film. Rizzo and Gonzo do a great job of providing comic relief for a lot of the film, and it really made me miss their teamwork in The Muppets. (Maybe we will see a revival of this in the new movie out next year?)
This was also the last Muppet film directed by Brian Henson. (He worked on The Muppet Christmas Carol too.) Seems he was a fan of covering the classics, hmm?
Even this wasn’t my favorite Muppet movie, it’s still fast-paced enough to enjoy from time to time with a few clever lines thrown in there. It was really interesting to me to see the huge amount of new Muppets that were also featured in the film. I barely recognized any of the shipmates so that might be fun for Creature Shop fans to check out as well!
Here’s hoping your Monday is not anything that might spike “Cabin Fever”. Though, the song and dance portion of the day might be a highlight.
