Muppet Monday: Time in a Bottle

“But there never seems to be enough time /
To do the things you want to do, once you find them.”

Doesn’t it feel like this every Monday morning, especially after a particular good weekend?

Well, we can all comfort each other with this great skit from Season 2 of The Muppet Show and Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle” (where the above lyrics come from).

Instead of Dr. Honeydew and Beaker hanging out in the lab, we have the Scientist, singing and fiddling around with potions. Can he really do what the song is conveying?

Doesn’t his voice sound familiar to you? That folks is Jim Henson.

“Time in a Bottle” was a number 1 hit for Croce in 1972; he wrote the song when his wife was pregnant with his son. Unfortunately, it was his last musical success because Croce died in a plane crash in 1973.

I do love how the individuals behind The Muppet Show translated this song into a scene in the show. A highlight is when the scientist looks straight at the viewer and sings the sweet:

“If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty, except for the memory of how
They were answered by you.”

Here’s hoping time speeds by this week, and you are back to enjoying the weekend sooner than you can imagine!
